I just finished an awesome story, the Book Thief by Markus Suzac. It's great. But the story is really sad. What book isn't sad if it takes place in Nazi Germany? Liesel, the main character, is nine at the start of the book, in January 1939. Her dad was taken away for being a communist and her mom is unable to take care of her. On the way to her foster home, her brother Werner dies. Soon, she meets her foster parents, Rosa and Hans Huberman. Her life starts twisting. She meets her best friend Rudy Steiner. She starts playing soccer on Himmel street. Her average day takes a turn when at 12 or 13, her family takes in the Jewish Max Vandenburg. Liesel realizes they have more than nothing in common. Max is one of my favorite character, mainly becAuse we have so much in common. We're both Jewish. Max and I both sketch a lot and like to write books. He is very figurative. One of the things that made me cry was when Max was ill and Liesel, who gave him weather reports, would go down and say "the sky is cloudy" or something while he was unconscious, or read to him. I was sobbing at the end. But this book also taught me to swear in german. So, if you want a book with action and drama together, go get the book thief.
